The original publication of Figure 10-15 (Fair and Matthews, 1958) did not cite any equations, and equations probably were not available, but when the curves were fit statistically, Eqs (10-10) were essentially perfect fits. In 1958, there were no computers, and the curves were drawn by hand. Why does the quadratic form of Eqs. (10-10) result in essentially perfect fits?
