2. I am writing this letter of request on behalf of the members of the Gauteng Fire and Rescue services, requesting change of shift working hours accordingly.
4. Members of the Gauteng Fire and Rescue Services on shift are in an agreement to change and arrange the shift working hours, inclusive of ordinary hours, standby time and availability of Fire Officers and Fire Fighters.
6. The current shift arrangements present us and the organization with couple of challenges that this new agreement seeks to solve and will solve should they be agreed upon, the following are the challenges that can be solved through this new arrangement:
8. Currently on every Wednesday there is a trip to Sapen Fire station that get repeated three times, driving about 310km in total per day and spending approximately +-R3,200 on petrol fees, this can be drastically reduced into half in this new arrangement.
10. There are two holidays which falls on a Wednesday i.e. 1 May and 25 December, this means that on these two holidays all members on shift about 54 members would normally get paid and public holidays pay rate and this can be reduced to only one shift when this new arrangement is implemented.
12. At current members are working back-to-back, getting fewer rest after each shift except for the long weekend off they are getting in each three weeks period. This contributes to the fatigue stress experienced and as one our highest risks. The new working arrangements ensures that the members will at least rest for a full day rest of about 24 hours after their shift.
14. This arrangement always ensures the availability of members should they be required for overtime on emergency like our recent mountain fires.
