Question:
Draft a Departmental SOP please assist me with the arrangement?
Safe Working Procedure (SWP) Use of ladders 1. Purpose
1.1 This standard operation procedure (SOP) addresses the placement to provide guidance in the safe ladder use, the storage and maintenance. This safe work practice applies to all the service employees.
2. Policy
2.1 This standard operating procedure has been established in accordance with the guidelines from the SANS 550, The South African Occupational Health, and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), and the Fire Service Brigade Act
3. General ladder precautions 3.1 Hazards associated with the ladder use; Falling from ladders (especially when getting on/off or contact with electricity) Struck by objects or by ladder (falling ladder or when carrying ladders or carrying items stored above head height) Tripping over ladders Muscle strain from carrying heavy ladders
4. Requirements - Before Starting 4.1 Before using a ladder, be sure to inspect it to ensure it is in good working condition and safe to use. Damaged or defective ladders must be immediately removed from service and not used; the inspection must check the following: Check rungs, legs, cross braces, and feet for damage, do not use ladders which have damaged cleats, rungs, or steps to avoid fall. Moveable parts must operate freely Hardware and fittings must be securely attached Rungs and steps must be free of grease or oil Ladder must be free of corrosion, rust, oxidization, and excessive wear, especially on treads Read labels for more specific guidance
5. PPE All the time a full PPE is required including the Work boots are required and must be always worn. Potential Hazards and Injuries Slips, trips, and falls Lacerations.
6. Pre-Operational Safety Checks Check cleats, rungs, and steps are firmly in place before use. Inspect ladder before each use. Lock cross bar in place level surface before use. Choose correct height of ladder for job required. Center your body between the ladder rails. Anyone using the ladder in service should: Use a ladder instead of a chair or box to avoid accidental fall. Make sure your view is not obstructed and maneuver the jack accordingly. Use on level ground only. Maintain firm grip and use both hands when climbing. Never climb the ladder from the side unless it is secured against sideway motion. Do not overreach. Move the ladder as needed. Face the ladder when climbing up or down. Keep the body centered between side rails. Do not stand any higher than the 3rd step from the top plate. Do not walk the ladder whilst standing on it. Do not leave a ladder in use unattended. Do not place the ladder above an opening door or access area without sealing them off.
Do not exceed maximum load of ladder. Do not straddle ladder or walk it. Do not use in closed position, leaning against the wall
Assess whether fall protection/rescue plan is required Consider if there is a better tool for working at heights. (e.g. scaffolding, elevated work platform) Choose the appropriate serviceable and inspected ladder for the task Use a fiberglass, or other non-conductive material, ladder when working near electricity or energized equipment DO Maintain three-point contact and always face the ladder when climbing or performing work DO Climb down and move ladder instead of overreaching DO Keep your body centered between the rails of the ladder DO Keep footwear clean, and the rungs free of mud, snow, or grease Follow manufacturer's recommendations.
Have a sore back, legs, arms, hands. Have dizziness, nausea, light headedness. Are taking medications that affect your balance or concentration.
DO NOT Use a ladder that is visibly damaged, twisted, or bowed Tag out of service and notify your supervisor DO NOT Place a ladder in front of doors opening toward the ladder except when the door is locked or blocked from opening DO NOT Use ladders in a horizontal position as a platform or scaffold DO NOT Place a ladder on top of another object such as a box to gain additional height DO NOT Step from one ladder to another; instead climb down to the ground then up the other ladder DO NOT Allow more than one person on a ladder at a time DO NOT Carry heavy, bulky or hazardous objects while climbing up or down a ladder DO NOT Use a ladder to support a platform DO NOT Paint a wooden ladder or use a wooden ladder that has been painted DO NOT Use ladders around windows, stairwells or unprotected edges
Proper extension ladder set-up & take down When setting up an extension ladder, use the following method to avoid straining muscles or losing control of a ladder: With ladders weighing more than 25 kg, or where conditions complicate the task, have two people set up the ladder, step by step, as follows: 1. Lay a ladder on the ground close to intended location 2. Brace ladder base using helper's feet 3. Grasp the top rung with both hands, raise the top end over your head and walk toward the base of a ladder. Grasp the center of the rungs to maintain stability 4. Move the extended ladder to the desired location. Lean it forward against the resting point
One person can erect a single ladder, step by step as follows: 1. Secure the base of a ladder firmly against the base of a building or stationary object 2. Lift the top of ladder and pull upwards to raise a ladder to a vertical position 3. Transfer a ladder to its required position when it is properly extended 4. Keep a ladder upright and close to the body with a firm grip.
Ladder Storage For the proper and safe storage of all operational ladders the following should be followed: Store ladders indoors out of the elements where possible DO Keep ladders clean and free of foreign materials DO Keep wooden ladders in a well-ventilated location, away from dampness and excessive heat DO Pad racks on vehicles with soft material to reduce wear and road shocks DO Identify ladders which overhang vehicles with a red or orange flag. DO NOT Overhang beyond support points when transporting ladders on vehicles (Stay within a few feet of the last support) DO NOT Hang ladders from rungs and DO NOT Store materials on ladders
