Last weekend I ordered a 12-inch deep-dish pizza at my favorite pizza place. My little brother decided to cut the pizza differently than usual, so he cut off a slice from point D to B in the diagram below. I was very interested in figuring out how much pizza he had left behind on the left-hand side of the pizza, so I drew in a diameter from B to C and I put a piece of straw tangent to the pizza at C. I noticed that if BD is extended, it hits the straw at A, five inches from C. Knowing that the straw is 5 inches long from A to C and the diameter of the pizza is 12 inches, how can I determine the area of the pizza region DBC? What is the area of that region to the nearest square inch? Last weekend I ordered a 12-inch deep-dish pizza at my favorite pizza place.
