Home Hero is one of the leading provider of housecleaning service in Peninsular Malaysia. Home Hero provides cleaning services to residential premises. They offer basic cleaning, deep cleaning, sanitizing, post renovation cleaning, moving in and out cleaning and other related services. The company was founded by Zaim Khalif in 1999 and has now grown to about 200 employees or 'cleaning angels' as they call them. The company mission is 'To help our customers have productive, safer, and healthier environments through a robust range of cleaning services, industry-leading standards, and sustainable business practices' while their vision is to become the most trusted, respected, and reliable house cleaning company in Malaysia. The company's strategic goal is to continue to expand into East Malaysia and the neighboring countries within the next three years. To drive the plan for growth, Zaim believes that the people in his company must have the right skills and attitude. To make this a reality, Zaim decided to hire a new Learning and Development Specialist, Akiff. Prior to joining Home Hero, Akiff had worked in a technology firm, and he was very eager to contribute to the learning and development of Home Hero. In his first week of work, Akiff examined Home Hero current training programme for the cleaning angels and noticed that the program requires the angels to attend training sessions conducted by their in-house trainer. The program is a lengthy five-day program with the first three days focusing on knowledge and principles of cleaning and sanitizing, safety procedures and various cleaning techniques and use of cleaning chemicals and tools while the balance two days centered on hands-on activity to apply what they leared. The trainers used videos, presentation slides, and handouts to deliver the principles and knowledge while the hands-on training will be done in several mock-up settings to represent various areas in a house. Akiff decided to revamp the current training by introducing an e-learning program that could be accessed from computers and mobile devices. He feels that physical training is outdated and cost a lot of money and whatever is taught in the classroom could be translated into e-learning components. Akiff also proposed to Zaim to implement a new learning management system (LMS) that would automate the administration of training for the company in terms of training materials, attendance, employees' data, evaluation, and financial planning. Akiff's enthusiasm managed to convince Zaim to approve a large budget for the LMS and e-learning module. Zaim was hoping that the LMS and Akiff's experience could propel Home Hero to new heights. The implementation of the new training programme at Home Hero did not turn out to be what Akiff and Zaim expected. The first wave of the training involved 50 angels. They were given a login name and password to access the LMS where the e-learning module was uploaded. The angels are required to watch ten videos and participate in several online interactive activities meant to teach them how to clean properly and follow the right safety procedure. All the trainees were given 48 hours to complete the whole module. The medium of instruction used for the whole training and evaluation is English since Akiff adopted the videos and materials from an international consultant firm based in Sydney, Australia. At the end of the training, the participants were asked to give ratings to the training and how it was conducted. Three days after the training, the participants were given an online test to evaluate whether they have understood the content of the training and master the skills and techniques required in their job.
