Question:

The preparation of a Career Portfolio was discussed in the Applied Communication activity. In addition to labeling one divider “Resume,’ label another divider “Personal Letters.” One type of personal letter is a cover letter.

When sending your resume, a cover letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself to an employer and highlight your strongest qualifications.

The cover letter, or letter of application, consists of at least three paragraphs. In the first paragraph, introduce yourself, state the job for which you are applying, and express an interest in the job. The second paragraph should contain a description of your qualifications and related work experience. In the third paragraph, include an action statement—request an interview, ask for a phone call, indicate how you will follow up, and—most importantly— thank the reader for her or his time and consideration.

Instructions:

1. Research how to write a strong cover letter.

2. In a newspaper or online, locate a job advertisement for a position for which you are qualified. Prepare a cover letter for the position you have selected.

3. Keep copies of all cover letters in the “Personal Letters” section of your Career Portfolio.
