EB New! Why MchLuhan's Still Hot and Cool Mark as Read Reply -Read by: 2 During my reading I found this particular article very interesting. During the article we learn how Mchulan attempts to make all his courses exciting. To eliminate being boring and to ensure the student were understanding the material, there was no expensive textbook necessary for the course. Instead, the focus was the environment the course was taught in. Do you think this is something we can apply to classes today? If so, in what ways can this help a instructor as well as the students in the course? Do you agree with Mchulan's statement: "any hot medium allows of less participation than a cool one, as a lecture makes for less participation than a seminar, and a book for less than a dialogue "( Media Hot and Cold pg.23) EB New! Re: Why MchLuhan's Still Hot and Cool Mark as Read Reply Read by: 2 I personally think the type of environment determines what type of discussions you have. For example some of my classes seem more talkative then others. Why? This is due to the fact that the students are not only understanding the material but are able to correctly display their level of knowledge and understanding and because of this the class willingly participates in discussion and interactive activities. I definitely agree with the statement MchLuhan's made. When instructors take over the class instead of giving students the opportunity to take initiative, it does not allow for creativity and willingness. Constantly going into a lecture where it constantly just have to listen and not able to apply or move around can be very boring and make it hard to apply the knowledge because you aren't really taking in the information, instead we are recognizing versus recalling the material New! Re: Why MchLuhan's Still Hot and Cool Mark as Read Reply y: 1 Interesting observation, Elizabeth! I like the idea of applying McLuhan's ideas about media channels to the classroom, which really does function as the channel that carries classroom lectures and discussions. Over the years I've been impressed by just how much the classroom setup can affect the way students engage with me. You're absolutely right -- as a teacher, if you start the semester out giving the impression that you're going to do all the talking, that's an expectation you'll never really be able to change. Strangely enough, though, there are always small handfuls of students who just want to sit and listen -- they definitely aren't interested in participating. So how do you get these students to engage? EB New! Why MchLuhan's Still Hot and Cool Mark as Read Reply -Read by: 2 During my reading I found this particular article very interesting.
