David, a communications major at a large university in the Northeast, wanted to strengthen his résumé and accepted an unpaid internship at a small communications firm where he was guaranteed that he would “be fully involved in all of the work that the agency was doing.” Eager to take on challenging assignments and learn new jobrelated skills, David reported for work. Unfortunately, he did he not receive any meaningful assignments (hello, photocopier!), and his supervisor rarely spoke to him. Regular employees left him out of staff meetings and sessions with clients, and the office was so unorganized that he never completed any real work.
