A plant physiologist investigated the effect of flooding on root metabolism in two tree species: flood-tolerant river birch and the intolerant European birch. Four seedlings of each species were flooded for one day, and four were used as controls. The concentration of ade-no sine triphosphate (ATP) in the roots of each plant was measured.
