Evans Monument Co. produces gravestones. The production of a gravestone is very labor intensive. The speed at which a slab of material, such as granite, can be shaped, polished, and engraved depends on the level of skill of the individual worker.

Management has established a standard of 40 labor hours per gravestone. The standard wage rate is $25 per hour.

During a recent month, 30 gravestones were completed. Management was pleased that only 1,120 labor hours were worked; however, total wages amounted to $34,000.
