Some advantages of having separate systems are that it provides juveniles with a second chance and a fair hearing. It is believed that juveniles are young and impressionable so with the right rehabilitation, there is still a chance for them to learn and grow from their mistakes. Another advantage is that with separate systems, juveniles are able to avoid stigmatization when they become adults due to the privacy and confidentiality of their identities being a main consideration for them. I, personally, do not believe that there are any disadvantages of having separate systems. However, some would argue that there are disadvantages, such as society not treating all offenders equally, a crime still being a crime no matter the age of the offender, and a lack of deterrence. There are many more advantages ad disadvantages to having separate juvenile courts and adult courts and both have valuable points to consider when discussing the topic.
Respond to this student below
The advantage of having two separate courts for adults and juveniles is that both courts are less crowded. It also separates the serious crimes from the ones that aren't. Typically, juveniles do not commit serious crimes, so they can be tried in the juvenile court. It is also goo to keep the juveniles away from the adult inmates in jail. Juveniles are usually immature, and they are still trying to find their place and who they are. Allowing them to be in the same jail as an adult inmate will increase the chance that they will re-offend or be bullied in jail. I don't really see a disadvantage in this way they are set up. I agree with the separation and I see all the advantages it brings to the public.
