Laetrile is a drug not approved by the FDA for sale. Some people believed it helped fight cancer. Some cancer victims sued the FDA, saying they had a constitutional right to privacy that was being denied by the FDA's refusal to let them have access to Laetrile. A court of appeals held that it was not reasonable to apply the FDA's drug safety and effectiveness standards to dying cancer patients since they had nothing to lose and were willing to try the drug. The Supreme Court reviewed the case.
