Lines on an organization chart can be solid, to reflect a direct reporting relationship, or dotted, to reflect an indirect reporting relationship to another manager. For example, in the human resource department of a regionally structured organization, you might report directly to your office or store manager but also have a dotted line reporting relationship to the HR director at the head office. When it comes time for your annual performance appraisal, both managers would contribute to that review.
