Paula Piper was a public defender assigned to defend William Aramy. Prior to William’s trial, Paula told the judges she thought William was crazy. Bail was set and William was placed in a mental institution. Paula failed to tell William how he could arrange bail. Claiming that his prolonged stay in the mental institution was caused by Paula’s negligence, William sued Paula for malpractice.
