Perhaps after all of the problems with imaginary people and places, you would like to try a problem based on actual fact. The U.S. government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics periodically makes studies of family budgets and uses the results to compile the consumer price index.
These budget studies and a wealth of other interesting economic data can be found in the annually published Handbook of Labor Statistics. The tables below report total current consumption expenditures and expenditures on certain major categories of goods for 5 different income groups in the United States in 1961. People within each of these groups all had similar incomes. Group A is the lowest income group and Group E is the highest.
