Question:

Ethics. Teamwork. Assume that you have been employed by a company for five years. Your experiences with the company have been generally positive, but you have not received the promotions and salary increases that you expected. Therefore, for the past three months, you have been applying and interviewing for another position. You have not told your present employer because you believe that you would lose your job. However, your employer called you to his office today to tell you that he has a health problem and will be leaving in three weeks for a onemonth overseas cruise based on his doctor’s recommendation. He tells you that he has always depended on you and that he wants you to assume leadership of the company while he is gone.

You are flattered by his offer, but you believe that it is in your best interest to leave the company and take a new position as soon as you find the right position. You still believe that if your employer knows that you are searching for another job, he will ask you to leave so that he can fill your position with someone else. Partner with a classmate and discuss what you should do and say in response to your employer’s request. Decide also what you believe the short-term and long-term effects will be of your response to the situation. (Objective 4)
