Some have advocated shorter work weeks for all. Yet, as Selmi and Cahn point out, that has not worked well in Europe. In 1998, for example, lobbied by labor unions, the socialist government of France mandated a 35 hour work week at the same pay. By 2007, the system had unraveled and the socialists were voted out of power. Similar efforts have largely failed in Great Britain, and Germany has moved towards increasing work hours.
