Thinking about high schools as places, suggest a possible relationship between two variables

(a hypothesis), and identify the independent (IV or predictor) variable and dependent (DV or outcome) variable. (Sometimes which is which is obvious; sometimes it is not.) Then indicate whether you think your hypothesis would be supported or not if we tested it.

Example: governance (public or private) is the independent variable. average height of the students is the dependent variable. “The average height of students is different at public and private high schools in the United States.” I do not think that we would find evidence supporting this hypothesis.
