Since the introduction of computer networks, computer buffs have frequently been able to hack into the networks

Question:

Since the introduction of computer networks, computer buffs have frequently been able to hack into the networks of large organizations, exposing the vulnerability of these organizations’ defences against computer crime. In many countries these activities are punishable by law, even if the hacker had no other purpose than to show the organization that their defences against this type of crime were weak. What do you think – should these ‘white hat’ hackers be punished for committing a crime, or rather be thanked for pointing this organization to a weak spot in its defences?
