Although little known in the West, Haier Group is one of the largest non-state-owned enterprises in China. With over 10 per cent of the global market, it is the world’s largest manufacturer of ‘white goods’. It is also the world’s fastest-growing appliance manufacturer. Haier was hailed by Strategy + Business as a ‘high-performing and truly entrepreneurial global business’ (Issue 77, Winter 2014). Its CEO, Zhang Ruimin, was invited to give the keynote address at the 2013 annual meeting of the Academy of Management and was lauded by the journal for ‘organizing the company around a conceptual framework that has guided its development for years – in Haier’s case, practically since its founding’.
