Question:
What do you think were the motivations behind these decisions to resign?
Launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook is probably the most successful of the so-called Web 2.0 start-ups. It has over two billion active users and revenues of over $40 billion. Over the years, Facebook has made relatively fewer corporate venturing acquisitions than other internet fi rms. In 2012, it purchased Instagram, the photo and video sharing social networking site, for $1 billion in cash and stock, retaining its founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. In 2014, it purchased WhatsApp for over $19 billion in cash and stock, also keeping on its founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton. The founders from both companies were attracted by the prospect of their companies being able to grow more quickly with the backing of resources from the social media giant. However, despite their companies’ continuing success and lucrative salaries, in 2018 the founders of both of these companies decided to leave because of disagreements with Mark Zuckerberg, the chairman and CEO of Facebook.
