As an organic chemistry teaching assistant, I would first go over the general concepts that applied to the problem at hand. Next, I asked the students to attempt the problem while thinking about the concept I went over with them. After, I proceeded to give them hints on how to solve the problem and had them collaborate with one another. This experience revealed the thought processes of many different students which has ultimately helped me tailor my teaching style to various student needs. As a one-on-one tutor in the ASTC I have learned to set goals, provide outside resources that can help tutees outside the tutoring session, and to give students personalized study strategies. During my time as a tutor I was shadowed and constructively critiqued by lead tutors in mid-semester evaluations. These evaluations helped me actively work on these goals to become a better tutor. For example in my first mid-semester evaluation I was advised to use more thought provoking questions such as why. This simple advice allowed me to evaluate my tutees knowledge of the topic more thoroughly. In practice, the tutees responses were sometimes surprising and I was able to correct their understanding of certain topics more effectively. During my time working for the ASTC I earned the College and Reading Learning Association’s Advanced Tutor, Level 2 International Tutor Training Program Certification.
