Defendants in a criminal proceeding have a right to the assistance of counsel. Petty Crime Pat was charged with driving with a revoked driver’s license four times. Under the law, the fourth offense was considered a felony with a potential maximum jail sentence of three years. The district attorney offered Pat’s attorney two alternative plea bargains:

(1) a 90-day prison sentence,  

(2) a lower charge to a misdemeanor along with a one-year sentence. Pat’s attorney did not mention the plea bargains to Pat, and the offers expired. Pat later pleaded guilty, and the judge sentenced him to three years in prison. Did the attorney’s conduct violate Pat’s Sixth Amendment rights?
