Suppose you manage a department of 20 employees and you wish to build an information system to track their computers, the software that resides on those computers, and the licenses for each software product. Assume that employees can have more than one computer and that each computer has multiple software products. Each product has a single license. The license can be either a site license (meaning your organization paid for everyone in the company to be able to use that program) or the license is a purchase order number and date for the order that paid for the license.

a. Design a spreadsheet for keeping track of the employees, computers, and licenses. Insert sample data for three employees and at least five computers with typical software.

b. Design a database for keeping track of the employees, computers, and licenses. Assume your database has an EMPLOYEE table, a COMPUTER table, and a SOFTWARE_LICENSE table. Place appropriate columns in these tables and construct the relationship. Insert sample data for three employees, five computers, and multiple software licenses per computer.

c. Compare the spreadsheet and database solutions to this problem. Which is easier to set up? Which is easier to maintain?

d. Use whichever of your solutions you prefer for producing the following two reports:

¢ A list of employees and their computers, sorted by employee

¢ A list of software products, the computers on which they reside, and the employees assigned those computers, sorted by software product name
