In some product liability cases, such as those involving asbestos, the nature of the risk being covered was not fully understood at the time many of the policies were written. For example, in the 1940s manufacturers began using asbestos as an insulator and fire retardant in products such as insulation and floor tiles. Thirty years later it was learned that exposure to asbestos could cause cancer.
