The Panic of 1907 was a financial crisis that hit the United States at the turn of the 20th century while the country was in the midst of an economic recession. The New York Stock Exchange index fell by 50 percent in less than a year, and a severe drop in market liquidity by banks resulted in numerous bank runs; bank, corporate, and municipal bankruptcies; and a near collapse of the U.S. financial system.
