Question:

As the newest member of the HR Staff, the HR Manager asks you to take over the company’s social media presence. He explains that the goal is to focus on their employment brand of high performing individuals in a fast-paced, fun, creative atmosphere in order to boost recruiting and attract the best young talent. As you explore the social media accounts, you see that the posts are well written, but nearly all the photos posted of good-looking young workers laughing and socializing together are stock photos and not actual employees.

You also notice that none of the actual employees seem to be pictured and the image of frequent socializing seems to be fictional too. You ask the HR Director about including photos of actual employees having a good time and explain it would be a good way to get to know the staff and they might enjoy being featured on the company’s social media. He replies that he doesn’t know of any socializing outside of work hours. Any get-togethers on company time are pretty dull and wouldn’t make fun photos. He explains “Hopefully when we get more views on social media, we’ll attract more fun young people and we can feature them!” Explain the pros and cons of his logic and the ethical issues involved.
