Career management encompasses an employee’s work experience from the first day until retirement and sometimes beyond. 

• Volunteer with an organization such as Big Brothers Big Sisters that establishes mentoring programs for youth.

• Volunteer as a peer mentor to freshmen or new students on campus.

• Contact your college HR department to see if they need student volunteers for HR tasks or assist with activities they have for retired employees. 

• Start a clothing drive in association with local women’s groups or SHRM chapter to collect professional clothing for women in job training programs who are re‐entering the workforce. 

• Establish a relationship with a local senior citizens’ center and assist with their programs such as holiday parties or Veteran’s Day observance.

As you put your service learning experience together, keep a journal of your activities, the time you spend, contact information for people you work with, and your thoughts about the process. When you’re finished, make a presentation to your class about the experience and what you learned. What concepts from Chapter 9 were you able to apply?
