Many of the rewards of community service and volunteering are intrinsic. Let’s hand out a few extrinsic rewards too. 

• Create a “Volunteer Appreciation Event” for a local organization, your college, or the United Way.

• Assist your college in developing student activities for the Martin Luther King Day of Service. If your college doesn’t participate in the Martin Luther King Day of Service, contact student government or the student activities office to develop an activity.

As you put your service learning experience together, keep a journal of your activities, the time you spend, contact information for people you work with, and your thoughts about the process. When you’re finished, make a presentation to your class about the experience and what you learned. What concepts from Chapter 11 were you able to apply?
