Question:

B. Data Analysis 1. Conduct a hypothesis test of independent samples (difference in two means) by ap- plying all four steps as presented in Section 8.4.

An airline's passenger load factor is a measure of the use of aircraft capacity that rep- resents the ratio (expressed as a percentage) of the total number of seats that are filled for an airline called Revenue Passenger-Kilometers (RPKS)-to the total number of seats available--called Available Seat-Kilometers (ASKS). For example, consider the very simple case where an airline has 500 planes, and each plane has a 500-passenger seat capacity (ASK). If the airline's systemwide passenger load factor is 80%, then this would mean that the airline's average RPK is 400 passengers per flight. The file Ch_8 Exercises Part B Data contains the monthly passenger load factors from October 2002 through July 2014, for all U.S. and foreign carriers for both domestic and international routes (Bureau of Transportation Statistics, n.d.). Your assignment is to import this data set into your statistics program and compare the load factors between domes- tic and international routes relative to the assumption that domestic routes have a greater load factor (and hence are more profitable) than international routes.
