The DOSM was excited and couldn’t wait to tell Jenny Rolf, the hotel’s GM.
“You won’t believe who I just talked to, Jenny.” said Michele Austin. “I just got off the phone with the meeting planner for the Accidental Insurance group. They want to book us for four days of meetings here. Basically, they want all the function space we have available plus a large block of overnight rooms.”
“That’s great,” replied Jenny. “Nice job. I know your sales team has worked hard to get them to give us a try. This could be really big for us. I would estimate they buy 2,000 to 3,000 room nights per year, every year, in this city.”
“That’s not all,” continued Michele. “The big news for us now is that they want to have a gala reception and banquet at the end of their meeting to honor their new incoming president … who’s best friend happens to be the governor! So the governor will be attending! I might be overstating it a little bit, Jenny, but, basically, my contact said that for this event, money is no problem. They want it nice, and they understand the costs.”
“How many people will be at the gala?” asked Jenny.

“They want to hold a function for about 450 people with predinner cocktails, ice carvings, live entertainment, a four-course meal, and just about anything else we want to suggest for them,” replied Michele.
“Well,” said Jenny, “this is great, but it will also be a challenge! Everyone will really have to be on top of things that night. Let’s go see the F&B director and give him the news.”
“You have got to be kidding!” exclaimed the F&B director when he heard about the sale. “I requested that weekend off three months ago for an Alaskan cruise, and I already bought nonrefundable tickets for my wife and myself. You approved my request, Jenny. Remember? Now what do I do?”
