Question:
Paul Eberhardt looked thoughtfully at the two supervisors, Bob and Rod, and then said, "Top management has given us a problem. No, strike that.
They've given us an opportunity.'
Bob grunted. "Something's coming and I don't like the sound of it."
"Relax, " said Paul, "I'm on the hot seat, not you."
"What's the prob — I mean the opportunity?"
asked Rod.
"We are now required to have an annual interview with each auditor on the staff We are to talk about good points, weak points, potential and chances for advancement. "
"Actually, I think that's been long overdue, " Rod replied.
"I agree, " said Paul. "Each auditor will be interviewed on the anniversary date of hire."
"Who's on first?" asked Bob.
"Marv Johnson, " answered Paul.
"That's why I called you in. Marv has worked for both of you. I'd like you to brief me about him. How about you.
Bob?"
"He's a budget-eater. Every job he's ever done has gone way over budget."
"Why?"
"He's just slower than a tax refund."
"But he's had some high-powered jobs and some significant findings and recommendations, " protested Paul.
"Yes," broke in Rod, "but he takes forever to find them and develop them."
"Doesn't he apply himself?" asked Paul.
"That's not the problem, " said Bob.
"He works hard, turns out great working papers, develops solid findings. But our operating managers are beginning to complain about how long he takes and how much time he demands of people."
"Haven't you guys tried to push him? " asked Paul.
"Yes, " the supervisors said in unison.
"What happened?"
"He just can't operate under pressure, " said Rod. "He turns out garbage when he's pushed, and his findings don't stand up."
"How's his writing?" asked Paul.
"Not bad," said Bob. "But that too takes forever; and he writes too much.
With the added programs we've got, he's ruining our realization of actual versus budgeted audit-days."
Paul said nothing. But he felt that somehow the potentially important resource called Marv Johnson could be improved. Bob and Rod left. Paul told his secretary Ruth to set up a meeting with Johnson for two days hence. He then leaned back and tried to figure out what he'd say to Marv.
