Venturing Abroad The new Player in Global Capital Markets: Sovereign Wealth Funds Sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) are one of the newest, and perhaps most controversial, sources of capital in the world economy. Sovereign wealth funds, which are government- controlled pools of capital, are estimated to possess $7.9 trillion in assets in 2018. Most of the SWFs are owned by oil-rich governments. Norway's Government Pension Fund is currently the largest, with $1 trillion in assets, followed by the China Investment Corporation with $941 billion. Other SWFs owned by governments of
