Question:
A smooth plate \(3 \mathrm{~m}\) long and \(0.9 \mathrm{~m}\) wide moves through still sea level air at \(4.5 \mathrm{~m} / \mathrm{s}\). Assuming the boundary layer to be wholly laminar, calculate
(a) the thickness of the layer at \(0.5,1.0,1.5,2.0\), 2.5 , and \(3.0 \mathrm{~m}\) from the leading edge of the plate;
(b) the shear stress, \(\tau_{o}\), at those points; and
(c) the total drag force on one side of the plate.
(d) Calculate the thickness at the above points if the layer is turbulent.
(e) Calculate the total drag for the turbulent boundary layer.
(f) What percentage saving in drag is effected by a laminar boundary layer?
