5. Marjorie Rowland began working at Stebbins High School in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in August 1974.

The school principal subsequently asked her to resign when it was learned that she had stated she was bisexual. When she refused, the school suspended her but was forced to rehire her by a preliminary injunction issued by a federal district judge. The administration assigned her to a job with no student contact and, when her contract expired, refused to renew it. Rowland sued.
