The collective-bargaining agreement between Ralphs Grocery and United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 135 contained a union security clause. The union sent a new employee of Ralph’s, a teenager who planned to work part-time, a letter stating that union membership was a condition of employment and that all new hires were required to come to one of the union’s offices to affiliate with it. The new hire’s mother called the union office to ask what his reduced dues would be if he objected to union membership and was told her son would have to visit the office in person to receive this information. Eventually, after further written and phone communication, the union sent the new employee information about the reduced fees. Did the union commit an unfair labor practice? Discuss.
