Often as a tutor, attempting to teach or tutor based on a system of logic from an instructor's perspective does not work. There is a need to assess students' composition and revision capabilities, but less from a perspective of correction and more so from a proficiency standpoint. Often, I perform a diagnostic for positive and negative aspects of students writing regarding syntax, grammar, punctuation, blocking, maintaining logical progression, and word selection. From that point I present to students their areas of needed improvement in order to augment their potential to write more proficiently and receive high marks.
