The Pythagorean theorem tells us that the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. Verify that the theorem is true by tracing the squares and fitting them onto the pattern of the upper two squares shown in Figure 5.11.
