(a) Consider replacing the objective lens in Fig. 33.48a with one that has a greater focal length, and moving the sample in order to keep it just outside the focal point of the lens. Does the image formed by the objective lens move closer to the objective lens, stay in the same place, or move farther from the objective lens?

(b) In practice it is desirable for a microscope to be fairly compact. To keep the microscope compact, should the focal length of the objective lens be chosen to be short or long, or does it matter?
