Until about 1945, staff accountants were hired at very low pay on a seasonal basis. They often worked only from December through the following March to become unemployed, at least as auditors, until the following December. After two or three "seasons" of auditing work, a staff accountant with promise might be given a permanent position with a CPA firm. Today, all staff accountants are hired as permanent members of the professional staff by CPA firms. What effect has this change in the structure of CPA firms had on the audit function?
