A word cloud is a visual representation of text data. One way to construct them is to present the words such that the most common words appear the biggest and closest to the middle of the cloud. As we depart the center of the cloud, the less common words are seen in smaller font. The Metro Codes Department in Nashville, Tennessee, handles property standards violations. The problems are recorded and are available online. Determining what the most common violation is or frequency of violations can help the authorities establish policies to reduce violations and ensure they have the necessary resources to handle some violations (e.g. removal of an abandoned vehicle). With over 35 000 recorded violations and no categories, there are limited alternatives to extract information from the data. The figure below presents a word cloud of the reported problems.
