Imagine that you are a senior manager who has recently promoted one of your best, most intrinsically motivated employees to manage a group of five people. Like Ben Hannam in the OB in the Real World feature, you employ a fairly hands-off approach in order to allow each individual to exercise competence and self-determination (the key components of intrinsic motivation) in performing their roles. Your newly promoted manager is employing a different approach and appears to believe that dictating not only the goal of a given task but also all the steps needed to accomplish it is the best way to manage people. Write a memo to this new manager explaining why your preferred managerial style is a better approach to motivating employees than a micro-managing approach where employees have little say in how tasks are accomplished.
