Patronage refunds sometimes given. These are payments of money refunded to members at the end of the year, based on the amount of business a member has conducted with the co-op that year. Whether or not the membership votes to issue patronage refunds raises the same considerations as profit distributions do. Refunds are helpful to lowincome members but are likely to be small. LO.1
