1. Please list one variable from the criminal justice field for each level of measurement.
2. Response the answer below if you agree or disagree why or why not.
Question- nominal level of measurement: identifies variables with values that have no mathematical interpretation; using discrete categories that vary in kind of quality not amount. Example: "state". Exclusive vs. exhaustive (=, !=) ordinal measures: specifications on the order of the cases, in "greater than" and "less than" distinctions. Understanding the ordering of variables, not size larger/smaller Attributes expressed in ranges Example: Pinkert scale 1-5 strongly agree/disagree. (>(<,>) interval measures: represent fixed measurements. cannot be "zero". example: prison sentencing, you can't sentence someone to 0 years of service. (+,-) ratio measures: fixed measuring units that could contain a "zero" point. The ratios are formed between the numbers and can be added or subtracted as well as multiplied or divided.
Ex: "how many times have you been convicted of a crime?" (x,/) crimj 7000 in december, 2014, the nypd began a pilot program for random officers in high crime areas to wear body worn cameras (bwc). There are currently 54 bwc in use which record police interactions and encounters with the public. The nypd plans to add 1,000 more bwc for random members of the department. a time warner news outlet recently made an attempt to obtain unedited bwc footage and the department placed a fee of $121,000 to edit the footage. The department refused to release unedited video due to privacy concerns.
What is the purpose of these cameras? Should the public have access to view the footage? Do you have any privacy concerns? Do you think bwc will change police interactions and encounters? Explain.
3. Answer response the purpose of these cameras is to help minimize complaints about police behavior and unnecessary use of force. They are too many back to back cases about police officers abusing their power and too many civilians getting beat up my police and police officers not being punished for the acts they commit other than being suspended from work which isn't enough. I think the public should have access to view the footage I don't see why not if you aren't doing anything you aren't suppose to be doing on the job. I don't think the nypd should make anyone pay to see edited or unedited footage that just sounds crazy if the nypd is so confident that they aren't doing anything wrong give the public the unedited footage .as far as privacy goes that's where a big issue comes in because police officers are human. yes , I do think bwc will change police interactions and encounters but this will only apply to police officers who weren't doing or handling the public the way they are suppose to.
