Choose two illusions discussed in the invisible gorilla. You can test these illusions any way you would like. Be a behavioral scientist and set up your plans for these experiments. Then try them out and record your findings. For example: let’s say you want to test the illusion of attention. You can enlist a friend or friends to try out something similar to the door experiment where a student asked an older person for directions and showed him a map of the campus. While the man was looking at the map, two men carrying a door came between the student and the helping stranger. The student ducked down and was replaced by someone else and the helping stranger never noticed. This experiment in the book was also carried out in a waiting room where the desk person ducked down as if to get something and a different person came back up. no one in the waiting room noticed. try it out with an American looking person and then with a clearly foreign looking person. See if there is a difference in noticing on the part of those witnessing it. another example: you can play the “why is that” questioning of how something works to see how much someone really knows about a question you pose to them such as “how does a bicycle work” or why is the sky blue, etc. see how long it takes for the person to realize h/she doesn’t really know how it works enough to explain in accurate detail. Another example is asking about flashbulb memory events such as “where were you during 9/11” or any other memorable event you yourself recall vividly. it could be a family event as well. just record the memories and then have them check with those they were with to see how accurate their memory really is. You could also make up a questionnaire of questions indicating confidence level issues to see if people are overconfident about their abilities. You can use any two illusions you like to observe and write about.
