Critical analysis essay: The love song of j. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot “the love song of j. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Eliot is a poem that reflects the modern world at the time in which it was written. This work was written and published during the literary movement known as modernism, which reached its height between 1900 and the mid 1920’s. historically, socially, and culturally, the world saw two global wars, and huge changes in industry, technology and traditional values such as, the belief in the desirability of industrialization, individual political rights, democracy, mass literacy and education, private ownership of the means of production, the scientific method, and even a disbelief in—or at least a questioning of—the existence of god. Therefore, the early works of T.S. Eliot, like “the love song of j. Alfred Prufrock,” draw on a wide range of cultural reference to depict a modern world that is in ruins yet somehow beautiful and deeply meaningful. In addition to showcasing a variety of poetic innovations in his works, Eliot’s early poetry also develops a series of characters that fit the type of the “modern man” during this time period. “the title character of “Prufrock” is a perfect example: solitary, neurasthenic, overly intellectual, and utterly incapable of expressing himself to the outside world.” after reading “the love song of j. Alfred Prufrock,” compose an essay in which you critically analyze one topic related to this short story:

• the beginning of the poem includes an epigraph from Dante’s inferno. Compose a literary analysis essay in which you compare and contrast Prufrock and Guido Da Montafeltro (the character in Dante’s inferno). How are the two characters the same? Different? Include specific evidence from the poem and outside sources to support your stance. => This is the topic and the thesis. a successful essay should have:

• an engaging introduction that introduces the topic of the essay

• a specific thesis statement that highlights the main point to be argued within the body of the essay

• well-focused body paragraphs that address specific subtopics and include supporting, concrete evidence (i.e. examples from class readings, quotes, statistics, facts) and analysis

• a conclusion that reiterates the major points of the essay.
