Law enforcement personnel frequently observe, deal with or become involved in extremely difficult and traumatic situations. The average American citizen does not witness in their lifetime what many first responders, specifically law enforcement personnel witness in one month. According to the uniform crime report, law enforcement agencies reported that approximately 50,000 officers were assaulted while performing their duties in 2013. Rosco P. Coltrain is a new addition to the (County Police Department, State police, Probation and Parole agency, or Federal Correctional Institution). He is married with three children. He frequently volunteers within his community at the local YMCA and other civic organizations. He has been working for the selected agency/department for six months. Over the past six months, he has developed strong ties with his colleagues and appears to enjoy his work. He has expressed how he hopes to make a difference and work his way up the career ladder.

Last week, while Rosco was at work, he responded to an incident with another staff member. Specifically, two offenders/suspects were fighting and he and another co-worker (Officer Wiggum) were the first responders. Officer Wiggum’s attempted to take control and de-escalate the altercation between the two offenders/suspects when the two men (offenders/suspects) unexpectedly began to assault Officer Wiggum. Therefore, Rosco intervened and he was also assaulted during this incident. After approximately 2 minutes, other personnel arrived to help take control of the situation. Once both men were in restraints, Rosco realized that Officer Wiggum’s was not moving. Officer Wiggum’s was knocked unconscious during this altercation and Rosco received a 4 inch laceration to his leg by one of the weapons that the offenders/suspects had. It should also be noted that one of the offenders/suspects also received multiple lacerations to his torso and subsequently died as a result of these wounds.

After Rosco completed his necessary paperwork, spoke with his supervisors and was treated for his wounds, he went home. However, he began to have feelings of anger towards the two offenders/suspects for hurting both he and his colleague. When he arrived for his next shift, he did not appear to be his usual self. His demeanor had changed. Rosco used to be very outgoing, now he appeared to be isolating himself from his colleagues and his family and friends. He also appears to be easily agitated about minor issues at work and at home. He over reacts to certain rule violations at work as well. His wife reports that something is “off” and he does not sleep that much and is hyper sensitive regarding the safety and security of his three children.
