Read the following and give response:
As a civilian in law enforcement, my perspective comes from both the civilian and sworn. I know that there is rarely a black and white version of a story and that both sides may alter it to favor them. That being said, I think it's hard to pick out particular hot buttons for both society and law enforcement. Recently, it seems that every interaction is a hot button in some shape or fashion. Officers and citizens alike are becoming more on edge due to the media's fascination with violence and the ever-presence coverage of it. Cops and citizens, particularly in urban areas, are going into these interactions expecting the worst and I fear that this is the worst hot button of all. With tensions high, a confrontation only makes emotions soar. Officers are trained to be the authoritative person in a situation. If they ask you to do something, they expect you to do it - it's a safety concern. Additionally, individuals that feel oppressed are now standing up in certain situation and this feels threatening from an officer's standpoint. Whether this good, bad, right or wrong, it leads to situations getting out of control. The moment an individual - cop or civilian - starts yelling, the hope for rationally working the situation out ends. I realize not all situations can be solved rationally, but the majority of issues relating to language barriers or miscommunication can. As a whole, we need to start appreciating the value of individuals. Officers are humans that choose to make this field their career. Not all ones are corrupt, racists, or rude. I think it's words like this that get spin officer's off the deep end. Additionally, not all citizens are criminals, dirtbags, or drug addicts. Its these notions and moments when officers begin talking down to citizens - in words or sheer tone of voice - things also head south.
