Read the following case study:
I am Chrystal Langston; I am a single mom of a 12 ½ year old daughter. I live in Arizona and work for a mining company. I work full time and go to school online. I am busy and have very little time for socializing. I am working on my associate’s degree in business and administration. I am taking this class because it is going to help me with the understanding of the social part of business and the structure that they have in societies. I look forward to working with you all in this class. One of the issues we have in society is a retirement emergency. It is stated that 2 out of 10 may retire at 65 however; this may not be a secure retirement. Some people are even starting to ask for less raises and salary increases in trade for a more secure retirement. With the number of people not wanting to retire because of the social security issues and weak economy this creating a deficit in retirement plans People are unable to save money and or have to dabble into their retirements early for financial help. Companies can help with this issue by offering more contributions into their employee’s retirement funds like 401k and ira’s. They could also offer incentives to help employees not dabble so much into their retirements. Companies can also start helping with getting legislations and reforms be passed to help in the retirement segments. Business sole commitment is a profit; with profits and stock amounts high companies are able to keep shareholders and stock holders happy. I know that they look to business needs and profit before shareholders. Shareholders get a percentage of that profit every quarter and when that company does not meet goals of production and safety they are unprofitable and cannot pay shareholders. Shareholders are the pursue of the profit however a company is not going to make production changes to make shareholders, they are making changes to better the firm and create better production that leads to profits. 2. My name is Melissa PUNSKA and I am 31 and am currently working on obtaining my bachelor’s degree in business. I have been attending SNHU for about two years now and previously attended NHTI in concord, NH for addiction counseling. I am working on my business degree to help further myself in my current career at liberty mutual. One of the most important issues that face our society today is the poverty. As we all know the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The rich receive better education and more opportunity while the poor struggle to provide healthy environments and education for their youth. In addition, there is a large population of senior citizens who have a hard time affording their everyday living expenses, i.e., food, shelter, etc. Another issue that faces our society today is the lack of opportunity. Many big businesses are shipping jobs overseas to lower cost. In result of this, many people are losing their jobs and also new jobs are not being created on our soil. Businesses could help with poverty levels by paying their workers fair wages rather than minimum wage. In addition they could build programs to help employees grow within so that they are able to continually increase their wages as move up ladders within the business. Businesses could also stop shipping jobs overseas to third world countries where they are basically paying nothing for their labor.
It is understandable businesses want to make money however, should this be more important than the wellbeing of human who is in a less fortunate situation? I do believe some businesses care about the stakeholder more than they care about profit.
