There is much discussion over children, technology, and society. Families today are impacted by technology in a variety of ways. This impact often sparks debates over who should make decisions about the appropriateness of technology for children. In the 2010-2011 Supreme Court sessions, they struck down a law prohibiting the sale of violent video games to minors. Requirement: If Winner's (2012) three guiding maxims were utilized, how would this impact social policy and debate regarding children and technology? Explain.
Winner's (2012) three guiding maxims are contextualized on the objective of having technology that has representation, is politically deliberated and is created with a specified use. Hence if the three guiding maxims were utilized, they would impact the social policy in various ways. To begin with, the three maxims will influence a change in social policy whereby the policies will be forced to factor a paradigm shift that would orient on the context of recognition of value, importance, and dignity of each with a vested interest inan ultimate practice. In that, the need to take the societal contribution will shift from being an ethical concern and move to a legal interest. Hence triggering a social policy, that demands representation of vested groups in any innovative initiative. Above that it will trigger social integration whereby social, political participation will be encouraged. Besides, the debate on children and technology will be impacted by the influence of technological innovation focusing on the objective of fulfilling a social goal other than just economic. Hence find useful ways in which values that include, social justice and freedom can be enjoined in the technological and public policy and seize from just a market value orientation changing the debate towards the social values that should be factored in future innovation that will benefit the children and on the freedoms provided in the First Amendment. The question is, if utilized would it amount to infringement of the First Amendment free speech protection? And whether it is possible to involve all stakeholders in an innovative idea without killing creativity?
